PEACE TO THEIR SOULS (2004)

This mosaic of stories from Paseky nad Jizerou is a rediscovery of the places where Karel Václav Rais set his famous novel. This traditionally Czech region of the Sudetenland has preserved an unbroken historical continuity, and so the old legends live on in the memories of the locals. In a loose adaptation of the memoirs of Drahoslav Waldmann, the local inhabitants appear in the roles of their fathers and grandfathers. The excellent performances by a dozen amateur actors from the nearby mountain villages adds to the authenticity of the past events. Memories march with our wanderers through the years of the entire past century. They are brought to life not just by the magic of film and jumps in time, but also by a sense of imagination colored by the traditional mediumship of the mountain people of the Krkonoše region.
